Contents • Prune Your Context Menus • Using ContextEdit When launched, ContextEdit reads your system's file association data from the Registry. Once all that information has been retrieved, the main dialog appears (see Figure 1). The file type list on the left side of the dialog shows all of the file types registered on your system, sorted in alphabetical order. At the very top of the list are two special file types: All files regardless of extension and All unassociated extensions. Below that, you'll see your file extensions, and below that, the list of master file types.
The shell commands and context menu handlers associated with the selected extension or file type are listed on the right. Because the file type list is likely to be long, ContextEdit provides a progressive search feature.
To locate an extension or file type quickly, click on (or tab to) the list so it has the input focus, then type the name you're looking for. The list will automatically locate and select the closest name to the name that you type. The Refresh button tells ContextEdit to reload your system's file association data from scratch.
Normally, you should not use any other programs to change your system's file associations while ContextEdit is running, but there is no practical way for ContextEdit to prevent you from doing so. If you suspect that your system's file associations may have changed, click the Refresh button. The Find master file type button will be enabled whenever your current selection is an extension key that is linked to a master file type as part of a compound association.
Clicking the button (or double-clicking the extension) will locate and select the corresponding master file type. If an extension key refers to a master file type that does not exist, ContextEdit will alert you to the problem and give you an opportunity to fix it. The broken association message box contains five options (see Figure 2). The default is to take no action but continue to view warnings. Another safe choice is to take no action and suppress further warnings for the remainder of the session.
