I'm usually not a huge fan of foreign movies. I don't have anything against them or anything, it's just that they usually don't appeal to me. You can say my tastes are shallow and that I'm not a true fan of movies if I don't think such and such a film from such and such a place is the epitome of film making. Frankly I don't give a damn. Not that there aren't movies from across the pond that I don't like. There're plenty of British comedies that I think are hilarious, and then there's the occasional non-English movie that strikes my family.
As luck would have it, happens to be one of those movies. To make it even better, not only is it a cool movie, but its transfer is excellent. It's almost enough to make me want to go out and look at more foreign movies. The Movie I ordered City of the Lost Children because it was on the recommended list when I went and bought. Since I loved Dark City just that much, I decided to take the plunge and see what this one had to offer. After all, everything I'd seen on the movie made it out to be a really creepy thriller. This was not the case. Fortunately, it was still good enough for me to like it immensely, even if it wasn't what I was expecting. The story is about this mad scientist (Who is actually the creation of another mad scientist who is apparently dead since he seems to be long gone) who can't dream. To remedy this, he employs the services of this cult that plucks out their eyes. He gives them funky-looking cybernetic implants to see with, and they in turn kidnap kids for him. He then invades the children's dreams in an attempt to feel them for himself.

A circus strongman's little brother is kidnapped, and so he sets out to find him with the help of a little girl thief. City of the Lost Children is just unbelievably bizarre when you watch it. The plot is a pretty simplistic good vs. Evil ploy, but the city is the real star of the show. While it's funky urban-decay architecture and opaque green water is fascinating enough as it is, even more so are the inhabitants of the city. Here's a quick little list of what you'll see in this movie: • Circus strongman • Assassin fleas and their accordion-grinder master • Evil Siamese twins • A band of child thieves • A brain in a jar • Circus midgets • A bunch of clones that suffer from narcolepsy • Borg/Hellraiser-type looking people • Dreams in a jar • A guy with a tattoo of a minefield on his head • A couple dozen Santa Clauses Hell, there're probably some others that I'm forgetting right now too. The cinematography is also pretty cool looking throughout the movie too.
